Widerstehe doch der Sünde (Just resist sin), BWV 54, is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach. He composed the solo cantata for alto in Weimar between 1711 and 1714, and probably performed it on the seventh Sunday after Trinity, 15 July 1714. It is Bach's first extant church cantata for a solo voice. The text of the short work was written by Georg Christian Lehms,

BWV. 54 RESISTE, PUES, AL PECADO

(Widerstehe doch der Sünde)

1. Arie (Alt) Widerstehe doch der Sünde,                                        sonst ergreifet dich ihr Gift. Laß dich nicht den Satan blenden; denn die Gottes Ehre schänden, trifft ein Fluch, der tödlich ist. 2. Rezitativ (Alt) Die Art verruchter Sünden ist zwar von außen wunderschön, allein man muß hernach mit Kummer und Verdruß viel Ungemach empfinden. Von außen ist sie Gold; doch will man weiter gehn, so zeigt sich nur ein leerer Schatten und übertünchtes Grab. Sie ist den Sodomsäpfeln gleich, und die sich mit derselben Gatten, gelangen nicht in Gottes Reich. Sie ist als wie ein scharfes Schwert, das uns durch Leib und Seele fährt. 3. Arie (Alt) Wer Sünde tut, der ist vom Teufel, denn dieser hat sie aufgebracht. Doch wenn man ihren schnöden Banden mit rechter Andacht widerstanden, hat sie sich gleich davon gemacht.

1 Aria (Contralto) Resiste pues al pecado, no permitas que te engañe. No permitas que te venza Satanás, pues aquellos que caigan, estarán condenados por siempre. 2. Recitativo (Contralto) Los pecados más nauseabundos presentan una amable cara, pero ten en cuenta que se purgan con sufrimiento y dolor, siendo la aflicción inmensa. Al exterior refulgen como oro, pero deja pasar el tiempo y verás que no son sino tenebrosos espectros de sepulcros blanqueados. El pecado es el cebo de Sodoma y aquellos que caen en él, no alcanzarán el reino de Dios. Es como una temible espada que atraviesa tanto el cuerpo como el alma. 3 Aria (Contralto) Cuando pecas, te arrojas en los brazos del demonio, origen del pecado. Si te mantienes firme y puro ante sus hechizos, lograrás que emprenda raudo la huida.
